- You look like a very smart woman, but …
- What you’ve said is very wise and interesting, but …
- You have a very good taste when it comes to clothes, but …

Have you noticed, how the word “but” impacts your mind? These examples have been specially designed to make this process easy to recognize.

Consider this, what would be your feelings after hearing above statements? Would you be happy because of such a compliment? I certainly wouldn’t.

But why does it happen? Because the word “but” makes your unconscious mind to cancel everything that was before it. Our conscious mind remembers everything that has been said, but it doesnt matter as the information is deleted by unconscious. By doing so mind prepares himself for taking a new information, which may also be a powerful suggestion. This is among the language technicalities conversational hypnosis is concerned with.

You can find this method very handy in variety of situations, however you must obey one crucial principle. You have to diversify section before and after the word “but”.

This is the secret to using this language pattern successfully. If I would say “a lot of producers make tasty jellybeans, but mine are the most tasty”, most of the people would assume I want to make your purchase some of my product. This way I make a very serious mistake, I will make you feel reluctance, you can then connect this negative feeling with my product.

Much more effective will be saying “A lot of producers may tasty jellybeans, but … would you like a drink? Lets get back to my jellybeans…”. It makes you think there’s not much to talk about when it comes to other jellybeans. That is certainly one more technique of covert hypnosis.

Just to make sure you fully comprehend what I mean I will give you another example. If you tell to your client something like:

Yes it’s true, other banks also have very good products, but our bank has the best products.

In the first part of the sentence, you confirm what your customers is thinking at the moment, but that’s not a good decision, because you sentence yourself for loss. You leave decision to conscious mind of your client and by doing so the part of sentence after “but” will never be accepted and acknowledged by his brain.

But why does it happen? Because this language structure loses its effectiveness when it’s used on the conscious plane of the mind. Is very similar to clarifying the joke few seconds after you told it. However, if you would express yourself like this:

I agree other banks offer similar products, but as we are talking, I would like to present you today, what my bank has to offer.

By doing this small adjustments you have completely modified experience of your costumer. First, he will notice you’ve just made a positive statement about products of other banks, on the conscious level, but he will not be aware of the fact that by using word “but”, you’ve made his unconscious mind delete everything said before and you’ve directed his attention to the second part of the sentence.

In other words, by using this model in a subtle way, you are confirming experience of person you are talking to and then you cancel it at the unconscious level to redirect his attention where you want it, in this case products of bank you are representing.
